The Senate urges the Government to promote cycling in cities and improve the safety of cyclists

The full Senate has approved unanimously a compromise amendment Socialist parliamentary group which urges the Government to promote cycling in cities and improve the safety of persons using this means of transport.
In the text adopted, the Senate also requests the Executive, in collaboration with local and state government, and with full respect of its powers, adopt policy measures in this regard. The ultimate goal of these measures is to promote cycling in cities and improve the safety of people using bicycles as transportation and never to the detriment of pedestrian safety.
The driver of the initiative, Senator of the PSOE in Cordoba, Antonio Hurtado, emphasized that this motion is part of an overall government plan which seeks to develop "a policy based on improving habits and a model citizen much healthier coexistence "with the objective of respecting the environment and focus on sustainability and energy saving.
In this sense, the PSOE parliamentary also referred to "the need" to change the transportation habits to healthier ones, using public transport and cycling, "which is the most economical, healthy and fast for small and medium distances and also saves energy and does not pollute. "
therefore stated that "it is necessary to" modify the current regulations that defines the bicycle as an 'alternative transport' to be considered "preferred means of transport." Hurtado has also recognized that the use of cycling in the city is still "a problem for the cyclist, who does not feel safe when circular."
"The implementation of the bicycle in the city would result in a significant advance in the quality of life of its inhabitants and would significantly eliminate the pollution in cities," insisted Howard, who came daily to the Senate bike.
