Olive Riley, of Woy Woy (North Sydney), began writing his "Blog" in February last year, sharing stories about his life during the two world wars, how he had raised three children alone and working as a cook in the outback, a term known to the remote areas of Australia .
With mind alert despite his frail health, Riley won an international audience for her blog, "The Life of Riley" (
www.allaboutolive.com.au ) and a series of videos on YouTube in which it appeared talking and singing.
She was considered the "blogger" world's oldest, since he was 12 years older than the previous holder of this honor, the English Maria Amelia. The
old Australian was born in 1899 and would have turned 109 years in October.
"I enjoyed the notoriety, kept his mind fresh," he told local newspapers his great-grandson, Darren Stone, a resident of Brisbane. "We had people communicating with her from as far away as Russia and America continuously, not just once in a while," he added.
Since February 2007, Riley hung 74 entries on her blog that a friend helped her open and upgrade.
In his latest "post" on June 26 spoke of moving into a residence and his poor health. "I feel weak and can not get rid of that bad cough," he said.
But also claimed to have sung "a happy song" with a visit, as he did every day, and said he had "read a lot of emails and comments from my internet friends."
