Intel launches next-generation mobile processor

Intel, the largest computer chip manufacturer in the world, on Tuesday launched the next generation of Centrino wireless processors, which it hopes to achieve a new revenue stream amid a broader campaign of introduction on mobile technologies.

The launch of Centrino 2 chip, previously known by the codename Montevina, came after a delay of several months and was much more measured than the presentation of the first Centrino processor in 2003.

Product combines wi-fi capability, which works only about 100 meters from the transmitters known as "hot-spots" with a new wireless technology called WiMax, which allows data transmission at high speeds over distances much longer, and could be used to cover entire cities.

IDC analyst Bryan Ma said that if the first version of these chips marked Intel's entry into the wireless space, the new model represents a major development for the industry.

"My big question is whether this is revolutionary or evolutionary; suspect it may be more the latter," Ma said

"However, even if only evolutionary remains a good fuel to take the industry forward, "he added.

The new processors will be used mainly in notebook computers, in line with the industry trend toward mobile computing technologies and light building development new wireless networks.

"The laptops will be the main thrust of the industry in the future, and notebook sales have surpassed those of desktop computers in many countries," said Stanley Huang, director of sales services and advanced techniques Intel Asia Pacific, who was present at the launch of the chip in Taipei.

The introduction of Centrino 2 is part of Intel's strategy to develop a wider range of wireless products for use in devices other than computers, especially mobile phones, according improves data transfer speed with new mobile technologies.
